HTML Basic Tags

Skeletal Tags

Let's discuss some basic HTML tags known as "skeletal tags". Every HTML page is built on these, like the skeleton of a body.

<html>Tag: "Root of an HTML Page"

Syntax:

<html>
  <!-- Content -->
</html>

The <html> tag is the root element that wraps all the content on the page. It generally contains two main parts: the <head> and the <body>. Add the lang attribute so screen readers and search engines know the page's language.

<html lang="en">

<head>Tag: "Information about the Page"

Syntax:

<head>
  <!-- Title, meta tags, links to CSS -->
</head>

The <head> holds information about the page (called metadata): its title, character set, description for Google, and links to CSS files. Nothing inside it is shown directly on the page.

<title>Tag: "Name in the Browser Tab"

Syntax:

<title>HTML Tutorial | TechSnow</title>

The <title> sets the text shown on the browser tab, in bookmarks and as the blue clickable headline in Google search results. It always goes inside the <head>, and every page should have one.

<body>Tag: "Everything You See"

Syntax:

<body>
  <!-- Headings, paragraphs, images, links... -->
</body>

The <body> contains everything that is visible on the page: text, images, buttons, links, videos and forms. A page has exactly one <body>.

Putting it together

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
  <head>
    <title>My Page</title>
  </head>
  <body>
    <h1>Hello!</h1>
  </body>
</html>
