Introduction
History of HTML
HTML was created in 1991 by Tim Berners-Lee, a scientist at CERN in Switzerland. He wanted researchers to share documents that linked to each other. That idea became the World Wide Web.
| Version | Year | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| HTML 1.0 | 1991 | The first version, with about 18 tags. |
| HTML 2.0 | 1995 | Added forms, so pages could collect input. |
| HTML 3.2 | 1997 | Added tables and more styling options. |
| HTML 4.01 | 1999 | Separated structure (HTML) from style (CSS). |
| XHTML | 2000 | A stricter version with XML rules. |
| HTML5 | 2014 | Audio, video, canvas, semantic tags and new form inputs. Still the current standard, updated continuously. |
Today HTML is maintained by the WHATWG as a "living standard". There will be no HTML6: new features are simply added to HTML over time.
