A simple Git branching strategy for small teams

“Main, feature branches and pull requests. Everything a team of two to ten people needs, and nothing more.”

Complicated branching models solve problems small teams do not have. This one fits on an index card.

The rules

  • main is always ready to deploy
  • every change starts on its own branch
  • every branch is merged through a pull request with one review
git switch -c feature/login-page
# ...work and commit...
git push -u origin feature/login-page
Keep branches short-lived. A branch that lives for two weeks will hurt to merge.

Really clear explanation. The example made it click for me.

Glad it helped, Hamza! Try changing the example and see what breaks.

Could you write a follow-up with a bigger project?
